A foreigner in small-town China is but a unicorn, arising curiosity and dispelling mystery. This unicorn seeks to share a part of that world in a chronological photo essay. My goal is to post at least one photo a day for 365 days.

{Day 29} Bodhidharma's Cave

It is said that Bodhidarma traveled to this place from India, and, in this cave, he sat for nine years.  It is said that he sat so still his reflection could be seen in the cave, a watercolor painting.

Luck would have it that the nun tending the cave stepped away for a few moments so we could snap a few photos.  Unlike Shaolin Temple bustling with tourists, the 4000m trek up mountain stairways attracts fewer.  It is a peaceful place.

Inside, you can see an beautiful shrine of the bearded patriarch covered in golden robes.  Outside the cave, we sat.  Prayer flags rustled in the wind, cicadas wailed in the summer heat, and cool air rushed out of the cave.
